Leonardtown’s Fair Housing Policy
Because we cannot always count on citizen goodwill, our country has civil rights laws to guide the actions of private and public housing providers. The Fair Housing Act of 1988 forbids discrimination and requires that state and local governments further fair housing practices.
The Town of Leonardtown strives to promote and encourage fair housing choices for all of its residents without regard to race, color, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, familial status, marital status, age or religion. The administrative practices, policies and laws of the Town will attempt to prohibit: discrimination in the sale or rental of housing, discrimination in housing financing, discrimination in providing brokerage services, and unlawful intimidation regarding housing choices. We will accept complaints from any citizen that feels that they have been discriminated against, related to their housing choice. The Town administration will make an initial investigation and refer the complaint to the state or the federal housing departments.
