Leonardtown is the county seat of St. Mary's County and is the location of nearly all local government and most state and federal government offices. Leonardtown is also the only incorporated town in St. Mary's County. This grants the Town unique status and allows control over planning and zoning functions within it's boundaries.
The Planning and Zoning Commission has approval authority for new houses and commercial developments. This helps insure that new buildings and development projects in Town are of a high quality.
Members of the Planning and Zoning Commission must either live or work in the Town. The Commission meets monthly on the third Monday.
