Discover St. Mary’s County Destination and Relocation Guide Now Available

The Discover St. Mary’s County Destination and Relocation guide is now available in both print and digital formats. The glossy magazine-style guide is published in partnership with the publishers of Maryland Life magazine. It features articles on the area as well as visitor information including listings for sites, attractions, and lodging and dining establishments. The guide also features information on relocating to St. Mary’s County.

"The guide serves as a great travel planner and business recruitment tool," notes St. Mary's County Tourism Manager Carolyn Laray. "We began our partnership with Maryland Life magazine in 2009 during the 375th birthday of Maryland and have again printed 75,000 copies of the magazine." The new publication includes a special feature on Leonardtown. The feature will also be included in the July/August 2010 issue of Maryland Life magazine.

The guide is free and is available at the St. Mary’s County Welcome Center in Charlotte Hall, at participating businesses throughout the county, at the county libraries, throughout the Naval Air Station Patuxent River and at state and regional visitor information centers. The guide will be mailed to those requesting visitor or relocation information and will be distributed at venues throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Election of three (3) Council members of the Town of Leonardtown will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010.

Notice is hereby given that an election of three (3) Council members of Leonardtown shall be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, and that the polls shall be open at the Town Office, 41660 Courthouse Dr., Leonardtown, Maryland, between the hours of 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM, on said date, for voting.

The deadline for filing is Monday, April 19, 2010 at 4:30 PM. Candidates may file at the Town Office, 41660 Courthouse Drive, Leonardtown, Maryland.

In order to hold elective or appointive office as Mayor or as a Town Council member one must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of the Town for at least one (1) year, and at least twenty-one (21) years of age. VOTING QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify to vote in a Town Election one must be registered. To register, one must be a citizen of the United States, at least eighteen (18) years of age, and have been a resident of the Town for a period of at least thirty (30) days preceding the election.

Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department to Host Comedy Night

The Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department will host a comedy night on Saturday, March 27, at the Leonardtown Fire House on Lawrence Avenue in Leonardtown. The doors open at 6 p.m. for social hour/”attitude adjustment,” seating begins at 7 p.m., and the comedy show starts at 8:30 p.m. The evening features Mark Matusof, who was voted Washington D.C.’s top comic by Washington Magazine, and Kier, a musical comedian who has worked with Reba McEntire and Kenny Rogers.
Tickets to the comedy show are $50 and include open bar all evening and a delicious three-course dinner catered by the Auxiliary of the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department. Historical Society Successful in Nomination of Newtown Manor House
The St. Mary’s County Historical Society (Society) is proud to announce that its nomination of the Newtown Manor House (House) for the Endangered Maryland program, a partnership between Preservation Maryland and Maryland Life Magazine, was accepted as one of eleven endangered sites in Maryland for their 2010 program. All the sites are featured in the March/April 2010 issue of Maryland Life. A selection committee of preservationists from throughout Maryland evaluated the nominations based on a list of seven criteria, including:
- historic significance of resource,
- urgency of the threat facing the resource,
- feasibility of solution and usefulness of the Endangered Maryland listing,
- level of community support;
- geographic diversity;
- diversity of resource type, and
- diversity of threat.

The House is thought to have been erected in the mid-18th century. The major threat to the structure is its slow deterioration from a lack of continuing maintenance. It is part of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Newtown Manor House Historic District in Compton. This mission is the oldest Catholic Church in English-speaking America. From this area of Newtown Neck and from other locations in Southern Maryland, English Jesuit priests conducted missionary activities among the Indians and ministered to the needs of the settlers beginning in the 1630s and 1640s. The Society felt that, by bringing attention and focus to this unique resource, progress could be made to preserve this wonderful historic building. The Historic District marks a location and site important in the 17th century ecclesiastical history of Maryland, as an example of a self-contained Jesuit community made self-supporting by a surrounding 700-acre farm. The Jesuit community recently sold that farm to the State of Maryland with the intent of developing a state park. In 1967, the Society of Jesus sold 7.5 acres to the Archdiocese of Washington, which included the old church and the House.

Commercial Trash Collection Notice

They will only be able to pickup where the path to the container is clear.

But, residential trash collection will be unable to reach certain alleys. The trash truck will be making collections from the street side instead of the alley side until the alleys are clear.

Customers whose alleys are still snow/ice covered should put their garbage bags streetside until the trucks are able to return to using the alleys for collection purposes.

If weather prohibits recycling collection on February 10, it will be serviced on February 17.

This Message Is A Reminder About An Important Part Of Filing Your
Maryland Income Tax Return.

Just under the address label is a place for you to name St. Mary’s County as where you reside. For those living in the incorporated limits of Leonardtown, you must also write the word Leonardtown in the box right beside St. Mary’s. Additionally, your physical address should be entered in the address box. Some residents use a P. O. box as their mailing address.

Why Is This Important?

A large part of the Town of Leonardtown’s operating budget is local income tax. The only way to be sure that Leonardtown is receiving all it is entitled to receive is by having all residents properly complete the City, town or taxing area box when they file their Maryland income tax return. This does not increase your tax at all. It just allows for proper distribution so your income tax dollars come back to be used right here in Leonardtown.

If you use a tax preparer, please make sure they know to type Leonardtown in the City, town or taxing area box.

GLENN FRANK & CHRIS REYNOLDS SPEAK AT THE COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND ON SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE NEWLY REVISED IRS FORM 990

January 11, 2010 In a recent seminar sponsored by the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata, Maryland, Glenn Frank, III, CPA and Chris Reynolds, PC teamed together to ensure that non-profit Organizations in the tri-county area understand the significant changes to the newly revised IRS Form 990. The seminar not only focused on what changed and which Organizations are affected, but shared a suggested plan of action.

Glenn Frank, III, CPA kicked things off by reviewing how and why the form got revised; the enhanced transparency of the new form; and introduced who might be affected and when. Glenn detailed how the form went from nine pages in 2007 to eleven pages in 2008. He clearly explained to the group how the core 990, representing eleven parts will need to be completed by almost every Organization. Together, they presented “how what and whys” of the new 990 schedule changes, explaining that there were only two possible schedules in 2007, now there are 16 possible schedules, for all years 2008 and thereafter.

"We always enjoy the opportunity to lead lively discussions on tax law changes", said Glenn Frank, III, CPA. "The questions and comments from the participants really make the experience enjoyable."

Chris Reynolds, Attorney at Law and active member of several area non-profit board of directors, offered his expertise and experiences. Mr. Reynolds led the discussion on the new governance, management and policy disclosures that are reported in the newly revised federal Form 990.

Glenn Frank, III closed the discussion by identifying key action items that each Organization should take. The increased time demands on the employees and volunteers combined with the additional higher legal and accounting costs to comply with all of the additional information disclosures will bring stress to our local non-profit Organizations at a time when they too are faced with a slowing economy.

“Glenn's preparation and presentation made the event fairly lively and the participation and openness he encouraged made for a more meaningful exchange between all in attendance. Keep up the good work," wrote one of the participants.

Askey, Askey & Associates, CPA, LLC provides valuable education on the significant changes to the Form 990 and required schedules to our local Not-For-Profit Organizations. In two recent seminars located in Leonardtown and La Plata, the Askey team detailed what’s new and when it takes affect.
