VETERANS DAY PARADE IN LEONARDTOWN ON WEDNESDAY!

Parade organizers invite one and all to come out and salute America’s Veterans at the Annual Veterans Day Parade in Leonardtown on Wednesday, November 11! The parade begins at 10:00 AM on Washington Street and will proceed through downtown Leonardtown, ending on Courthouse Drive. The Parade will feature Veterans, dignitaries, elected officials, local school marching bands, military units, color guards, bagpipers, classic and antique cars, boy and girl scouts, cheerleaders, horses, motorcycles, fire, police, and emergency personnel and equipment, and more! Immediately following the parade, spectators are encouraged to remain in the Town Square for the Veterans Memorial Ceremony, which will include patriotic music and laying of wreaths in honor of our Veterans.

Parade participants are requested to arrive and be in their assembly area by 9:00 a.m. and check in with parade coordinators on Washington Street for their line-up assignment. Dignitaries, Veterans, VIP’s, Re-enactors, Pipers, School Bands, Color Guards, and Classic Cars should enter the downtown via Fenwick Street, where they will be directed to their assembly area on Washington Street. Motorcycles, Floats, Scouts, Dance Groups, Walking Groups, and Horses should enter the downtown via Lawrence Avenue, where they will be directed to their assembly area. Emergency equipment and other large vehicles will assemble in Leonardtown Elementary School parking lot.

Spectators are encouraged to use the round-trip STS shuttle bus service from the Governmental Center parking lot into the downtown. Washington Street into downtown Leonardtown will be closed to incoming traffic from 8:00 a.m. to Noon. Downtown parking and thru traffic will be limited to areas accessible from Fenwick Street and Lawrence Avenue. In an attempt to relieve traffic congestion on Lawrence Avenue, spectators electing to drive into the downtown are requested to enter from Rt. 5 via Fenwick Street at Ryken Hill and park in designated areas along Park Avenue and Courthouse Drive. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with parking directions and street detours.

"Scarecrow Making" on the Square - Saturday Oct. 31st

Oyster Scald - Fairgrounds - St. Mary's County

Our Lady's Church at Medley's Neck will hold their annual Oyster Scald at the St. Mary's County Fairgrounds on Sunday, November 8, 2009 from 11:45 a.m. until 4 p.m.

In addition to oysters, there will be oyster stew, fried oysters, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda, beer and wine, as well as a dessert table.

AT SEMINARS ON TAX RETURN REFORM

Askey, Askey & Associates, CPA, LLC provides valuable education on the significant changes to the Form 990 and required schedules to our local Not-For-Profit Organizations. In two recent seminars located in Leonardtown and La Plata, the Askey team detailed what’s new and when it takes affect. The two hour seminar helped the attending Organizations discover the many changes on the 990 and required schedules. The new information disclosures have moved from complex to convoluted, adding pages to Form 990 and an alphabet soup of new required 990 schedules.

Tara Ghrist, Tax Specialist, kicked things off by reviewing how and why the form got revised; the enhanced transparency of the new form; and introducing who might be affected and when.
Christa Mudd, Audit Supervisor, detailed how the form went from nine pages in 2007 to eleven pages in 2008. She clearly explained to the group how the core 990, representing eleven parts will need to be completed by every Organization.

Janice Rohme, Tax Manager, presented how the new 990 schedules have changed, explained that where there were two possible schedules in 2007, now there are 16 possible schedules in 2008. She explained how the Organization’s responses to questions in the Core Form determined which additional schedules were required.

Glenn Frank, III, Tax Manager, identified key action items that each Organization must face. From the increased time demands on the employees and volunteers of each Organization to the budgetary issue faced with the additional costs to comply with the additional information disclosures.

“We always enjoy the opportunity to lead discussions for Not-For-Profit entities to inform them of the new tax law changes” said Glenn Frank, III, CPA. “The questions and comments from the participants really make the experience enjoyable.”

On Saturday October 24, 2009, there will be a Bluegrass music show to raise funds for the first ever Hospice House in St. Mary’s County. Presented and coordinated by Jay Armsworthy, the “Bluegrass for Hospice” will be held at the Flat Iron Farm on Flat Iron Road in Great Mills, Maryland with many local Bluegrass bands providing entertainment beginning at Noon.

The festivities will kick off at 7:00 am with an Arts & Crafts Fair. Then at Noon the Bluegrass will begin with some of Southern Maryland’s finest Bluegrass bands (not in this order) David Norris, Recent Addition, Jack Tippett Band, Zekiah Swamp Cats, Bubby Abell & Spoon Creek, Jay Armsworthy & Eastern Tradition, Joey Tippett & the California Ramblers, and Charlie Thompson & Bottom County Bluegrass. There will also be a Guest Star Appearance by Rounder Recording Artist Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass from Pennsylvania for one show only. Sound for the event will be provided by Troy Jones.

The mission of Hospice of St. Mary’s is to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support to terminally ill patients and their families and bereavement care to those families and the community. The Hospice House is near completion but is still in need of financial donations and contributions to complete the project. The facility is located on a peaceful site in Callaway, Maryland and will allow citizens of St. Mary’s County to spend their final days in the comfort of an inviting home setting, with twenty four hour care, when such an option does not exist at the patient’s residence. A Hospice House offers an important option for people who cannot die at home or who want to receive specialized end-of-life care from trained staff. The Hospice of St. May’s Board of Directors hopes that Hospice House will have a positive and enduring impact in St. Mary’s County. Your support and dedication will allow us to achieve the goal of caring for our first patients by fall of 2009.

In addition to the great Bluegrass music, there will be lots of other things to do throughout the day of the “Bluegrass for Hospice” with many vendors including food vendors available to sell food. There will also be 50/50 Raffles, many Door Prizes, and items available for Silent Auctions. All proceeds for this day will go toward the Hospice House of St. Mary’s. Please bring a lawn chair. The event is also handicap accessible.

Non-perishable food items will be collected that day to help replenish the food banks in Southern Maryland. Today more Americans are struggling to put food on the table — hit by everything from the mortgage crisis to high gas prices. The food banks in Maryland are running critically short on supplies. Less food is getting donated to the food banks which means they are getting less food back out into the community.

So if you’d like to participate, just bring a non-perishable food item of your choice to the show and it will be collected and distributed to the food banks for the tri-counties.

Tickets for the “Bluegrass for Hospice” are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door. For advanced tickets make your tax-deductible contribution payable to Hospice of St. Mary’s. Please provide in the memo section of the check, “Bluegrass for Hospice” and mail along with a self addressed stamped envelope to: P.O. Box 741, California, MD, 20619. The deadline for mailing tickets will be October 10.

Farmers Market Comes to Town Square

Visit the "new" Farmers Market in Downtown Leonardtown, in front of Jeannie's Park, each Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Delicious home baked goods are sold by "Ma's Pastries." You can purchase a variety of yummy cookies, pies, cinnamon rolls, and breads - mmmm! Beautiful flower baskets and local produce are also sold at the stand right next to "Ma's." Fresh tomatoes, eggplant, squash, and corn are just some of the vegetables on display, and the flower arrangements are gorgeous! To increase public awareness of Leonardtown’s participation in the Maryland Municipal Leagues’ Geocache Trail, St. Mary’s County Government Channel 95 will broadcast a four and a half minute video entitled “Leonardtown Geocache” beginning Wednesday, April 29 at 9:00 a.m. It will be scheduled periodically on Ch. 95 each week; check the county’s website for the schedule at www.stmarysmd.com or call the Public Information Office at 301-475-4200, x1340.

“Geocaching” is a game of hide and seek played by participants all over the world. A geocacher hides a small box of trinkets, posts its GPS coordinates online, and then other geocachers search for it with the use their own GPS units. The program explains geocaching and how to participate in the search. It features comments from Leonardtown’s Mayor J. Harry Norris, and from local geocachers.

The Maryland Municipal League (MML) is an association of cities and towns in Maryland that works to support the interests of municipal government. To attract visitors to its various municipalities, the MML is sponsoring a series of geocaches all over the state, and one of those caches is hidden somewhere in Leonardtown. The Maryland Municipal League (MML) Geocache Trail, Celebrating Maryland’s Cities and Towns, was launched in January. A trackable, highly coveted geo coin will be given to the first 500 geocachers who locate a minimum of 22 city/town caches throughout the state.

The trail is comprised of 78 participating cities & towns with a total of 79 cache hides. The caches are located in 11regions throughout the state.

To be eligible for the coin, geocachers pick up a passport at participating visitor centers (the Welcome Center in Charlotte Hall has a supply), use the stamp in each cache on their passports and write in the cache code word. After at least two municipal caches in each of the 11 districts are discovered, geocachers may return to any one of the participating county visitor centers and have their passports validated to receive a collectable coin. Passports may continue to be used even after all coins have been claimed as a way for geocachers to keep track of their discoveries.

Many geocachers are discovering Leonardtown via the program. “This popular new game is drawing visitors from all over,” said Carolyn Laray, Tourism Manager, St. Mary’s County Government. “Many are discovering our community for the first time.”

Health Department Needs Volunteers

LEONARDTOWN (January 22, 2009) - - St. Mary’s County Health Department needs several people who would like to volunteer to join our team in protecting and promoting the health of St. Mary’s County citizens. Volunteers are needed three or four hours a week for scanning records. Training will be provided. For those people who are not interested in working in an office setting, volunteers are also needed to transport citizens to doctor appointments.
